Assalamu alaykum all,
First all of all, let me tell you all what a relief it is to see a
place like this where muslims can share ideas and support one another. It
gives me one more reason to be proud for being a muslim.

Anyways, i'm posting this message because i need your help brothers and
sisters. You see, i'm a recent immigrant , i've only been in the states
for 6 months. I live in nashville, TN. I don't know many muslims.
Oh sure i know a lot of people from my native country but i've since
long discovered that being a born muslim doesn't always guarantee that
you'll turn out to a good muslim. And to tell you the truth , this isn't
exactly the best place to lead a muslim life. But then again, it's an
opportunity for muslims to really come together and discover that we
what we have in common(this beautifull religion) is much stronger than
anything that might differentiate between us.

Having said so, i'm quite depressed at this moment. Because i want to
have muslim friends who can help me become a stronger muslim, and with
whom i can share my joys and sorrows. I want to be an active muslim, but
i don't know where to start. I come from a culture where going to
university, working, and then marrying, is considered the best path that one
can take to have success. I did finish university, and i'm working
right now, but that hasn't given me any kind of satisfaction. And while i'm
not married yet, i don't think that marriage in itself will bring me
the kind of fulfillment that i'm looking for. Don't get me wrong, i would
love to marry someday and have kids, but for that i need to meet a good
muslim who shares my aspirations.I believe that Allah has given me
intelligence and education so that i can add something to this world. And i
don't really feel at ease , unless i'm helping someone even if it's
just helping an old lady cross the street.

In any case to cut a long post short, i need to know :
1- if there are active muslims in my area that i can get to know.
2-if there's an islamic organization that i can join so that i can make
myself useful.

Sorry if i bored you all with this long post, but i didn't know
anywhere else to go.

salaam
A.A

Anonymous,

I read your message and in a way i can relate to how you feel in need of good muslim friends, i know i'm lucky that i have them, insha Allah you will find them too. I live in europe, so thats kind of far away....but you can go to a nearby mosque or several, Islamic centers and i'm sure there's someone who fits your standards and maybe you'll meet somebody via this message(although you should be careful with meeting people through the internet). I hope you'll find what you're looking for.

Ma3a Salama,
Nurain.

Salams...
well i know where you can start to find our local masjaads and within them they should have organiztions:
www.islamicfinder.org
just put in your zip code and find the nearest masjaads near you....
talk to the imam or the masjaad people and ask them if they have seminars and lectures or even activities for you
*There are many conferences that go on throughout the US..i don't know about all of them
well every year ISNA does one at labor day weekend (that is for future reference)
and..i am pretty sure that MSA (muslim student association) has programs at colleges..even if you already graduated..
Talk to people in the masjaad...see what they do and where you can take classes or anything you might think is fulfilling...

just some suggestions

I know a sister that is president of her MSA in Nashville, TN (at least she was last year).  I'll ask her for the information, insha'Allah.

Thank you brothers and sisters for the suggestions. I know a couple of
masaajids in nashville, i think one of them has lectures going on..but
i'll get more informed.  As for the brother looking for the sister
who's the president of an MSA...thank you,i reallly appreciate that.

Jazakumu Allahu kheiran all of you.

PS: if it's not too much of a inconvenience, can somebody tell me which
states have universities with strong MSA's...my cousin has 1 year to go
in high school and she'd like to go to a university where there's a
strong muslim presence. Thank you

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

I know that the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor has a very strong MSA, as well as an awesome islamic studies program with Dr. Abdul Hakeem Jackson.  I'm actually applying there myself :)

Some other places that I know have strong MSA's are Temple in PA and UCLA.

What's good to do is ask people who actually attend the college because they can tell you what's really goin down with the MSA..

And another good thing to do is check out the MSA's homepage, you can tell a lot about an MSA from it's website.. you can also find emails on those pages and get in contact with people who are active in the MSA..

You can check out some at http://www.jannah.org/mamalist under "MSA" or any search engine.

Hope that's helped inshaAllah :)

take care
wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah.
