| As Salamu Alayka, No. Actually all I can grow is a guotille(sp?). I think it has something to do with my ethnicity as many original inhabitants of Central and North America cannot grow full beards, you know cheeks and neck and what not. I keep it because it is an easy sunnah to fulfill, alhamdulillah, and also because of ahadith, for example one: Volume 9, Book 93, Number 651: Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "There will emerge from the East some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible). The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving (of their beards). (Fateh Al-Bari, Page 322, Vol. 17th) I do not know if shaving the beard is necessarily an outward expression of an inward turmoil or spiritual deficiency, so to be safe I avoid shaving the beard. My wife tells me it makes me look a lot older. Fortunately/Unfortunately I have very good complexion and skin, so if I do shave, people have called me ma'am or miss, audhu billah. So at the very least it does away with any ambiguity there. I got to laugh at that.... Regards, QAK |

| alhamdullilah i have one why? obviously because its a sunnah most of the male members in my fathers family had one so it was kind of easy though a few memebers of my family did oppose it well the first time i grew a beard was in my 11th std had it for about three years shaved it off on my second day of med school why? was i sacred? was i ashamed? i really dont know but as time went on and as i got older and as my deen grew i again kept my beard in my pre final year of med school and from then alhamdulilalh its been there on my face though sometimes its just a little more than a stubble(accidents with my new beard trimmer :) ) |

| Assalamu Alaikum, Initially, I kept my beard because my father forbade me from shaving (he has one too, and never shaves). I didn't like it at first and wanted to partially shave it. Later, I clipped it but stopped clipping it after some time. Now alhumdulillah, I'm fine with it and only shave a teeny tiny bit that grows on my cheeks closer to my eyes/nose. I don't shave it enough to make it one of those thin beards, just enough to keep it neat. Wassalam, Sabri |

| Assalamu Alaikum, Also I get the feeling that I'd look better clean shaven (how many brothers think that btw?), but its better to follow the sunnah, so the beard stays insha Allah. I know of some brothers who shave because of their jobs. I also realise that for brothers who don't wear a kufi, thobe, etc, (including me) a beard would be helpful in identifying them as muslims. Apart from those dodgy drag queens on tv I've never seen a clean shaven man who looks like a woman. |

| Salam, Yep, if you call the Brad Pitt I forgot to shave this morning stubble a beard :) Coincidentally, in some cultures when they want to diss someone, they call him 'weak-bearded'...I always wondered what that was about. |

Also, when i look at sikhs, i always use to feel how strong they are in their beliefs. They not only sport beard, they do not cut their hairs and have the turban thingy too. And we muslims, though proclaiming islam to be the truth, haqq, the complete way of life and blah blah and still do not follow the basic practices. :( Also, when i first kept my beard, there were strange and funny reactions from people around me...particularly my colleagues at the office. :) One guy asked me...'is your wife expecting ?' :o I was like...huh ? i'm not yet married. Then i asked him about what the beard has to do with the wife's pregnancy. It seems in his culture(he's a hindu) when the wife is in their 8th or 9th month of pregnancy, some guyz do not shave. Wierd, isn't it ? Comments like "why are you so 'udaas'(sad) that you hv kept the beard? " were quite normal. wasalam Faizan |

| [slm] Beards are so important. Like I always tell bros "the ladies have their hijab, and we have our beards" and I always encourage the ones that shave to grow it. And a couple have told me that in desi culture to have a beard is to be considered a maulvi, a fanatic. Like one bro he recently started letting his grow out and I was like "mashaallah!" and he goes "yea, but my parents want me to shave it soon" :( Well I can't grow a full sunnah style beard, I just have the stubble here and there. Some genetic flaw or something, which I hate. One bro was tellin me that humans always want what they can't have and since I can't grow a full beard, that's why I want one so bad. So whenever I see bros with full beards I'm like "Alhamdulilah!" and when I see bros who shave I say "Astaghferulah!" [wlm] |

| rasheed me too.. I can't grow. Its cause I got i'm a [edit], most of us only get a few ugly hairs. U know what gets me? ignorent people who don't know this and critasize you for not having one. Its harder for me cause i look white, so they don't believe me when they ask me why i dont have a beard and i tell them "cause i'm a [edit]". [edited by admin] |

| asalaamu alaikum, I started growing one... in fact, I start many times... since my my family is very uncomfortable with it (with a "muslim trademark") I refrain from growing it too long but maintain something I just usually keep a goatee cause all of the beard hasn't really thickened in some parts, so its alright but patchy I wonder if its curly or straight lol sometimes I get into trimmer accidents... [/quote] Well, basically, after performing 'Umrah, I had already reverted to Islam but didn't keep the beard until 8 months after it. It was my cousin from States, who sent me a book with the title "The Beard, why?", and it was that book that made me feel as if I was lacking something very basic, and committing a huge sin by not following such a strongly recommended sunnah. So, finally, Allah (swt) gave me the taufiq to keep the beard as well. I also have that goatee type beard, naturally, but I still maintain it, though, I dont like it when people comment on my beard thinking that I kept this beard for fashion/beauty and not for sunnah, but then at the same time I feel so proud when I tell them that its in following of sunnah. Those were really good words. This is what we call self-analysis and self-criticism, and it is very necessary to do something positive. I wish all Muslims during these times could think like that. [quote]anyone want to spell out the assumed relationship between the two for me? is it just that when one's under the weather so to say, they stop taking care of themselves? or something else?[/quote] Basically, it has been a trend since past long (specially in our desi culture, atleast that's I am sure of) that whenever men are struck by grief, like somebody's death, they do not shave for many days, just because they are so dull due to the intensity of grief/sorrow that they feel like doing 'nothing', and hence the beard grows. So, back in our desi culture, it has now become a common practice that whenever people see someone with the beard, who used to be clean shave, they associate it with grief, which we call 'udaasee'in Urdu. Hope, it makes sense. WAssalam. |
