CELEBRATING THE PEOPLE

A PALESTINIAN FILM FESTIVAL AT GEORGIA TECH

Where should we go after the last frontiers?
Where should the birds fly after the last sky?

                             (Mahmoud Darwish)

The SOJ, Students Organizing for Justice (A Georgia Tech Student
Organization), is delighted to invite you to the 1st Palestinian Film
Festival at Georgia Tech, to be held February 7-19, 2002.

Our goal is one of cultural enrichment about the Palestinian People for the Georgia Tech campus and the wider Atlanta community. The Palestine Film Festival seeks to provide the community with quality films about and by Palestinians - films that could be inaccessible without such an event.

What does the reality of Israeli Occupation of Palestine actually mean? As the clamp of military occupation tightens over Palestinian lands, resources and lives, it has become imperative to expose how the Palestinian peoples' everyday lives are affected by it. Daily deaths, recurrent home-demolitions, extended closures, economic hardships and unjust dispossession: all this the Film Festival attempts to capture as a felt experience - as charged, tactile
and irreducible as the medium of film, documentary or fiction, may
grasp and transmit.

The films selected for this festival unearth the Palestinians as People - a fact frequently dismissed by conventional media. It is in those films that we discover a Palestinian identity that is not constructed simply under the unbearable thrust of Occupation, or merely in defiance of an overpowering adversary - but rather as the genius of a people whose perseverance transforms suffering into inspiration, and hardship into jewels.
